Over 5000 visitors to world class Fashion & Freedom exhibition
Fabulous. Intriguing. Inspirational – just some of the reactions from visitors to the Fashion & Freedom exhibition at Princes Quay last month, which attracted over 5000 visitors during four weeks.
The exhibition, which was part of Hull’s 10th Freedom Festival, explored the link between fashion and freedom with contemporary pieces on show from leading names in British fashion, from Vivienne Westwood to rising stars like J JS Lee, inspired by the impact on women’s fashion since the First World War.
Princes Quay Shopping Centre played host to the exhibition as part of their ongoing support for local cultural and arts projects. Marketing Manager, Sarah Smith explains: “We have partnered with Freedom Festival Arts Trust for a couple of years now and when the opportunity to host this exhibition came up we were delighted.
“As a centre, we’re passionate about hosting arts and community projects and this formed an integral part of our ambition to become a community hub in the heart of Hull.
“We’re pleased that so many people were able to enjoy the exhibition and we’re looking forward to partnering with Freedom Festival again in 2018.”
Mikey Martins, Artistic Director and Chief Executive of Freedom Festival Arts Trust, said: “Fashion & Freedom was one of the key highlights of the programming this year and to be able to host it within Prince Quay for four weeks was brilliant.
“More than 5000 people came through and engaged with the exhibition and we have some great comments and feedback from visitors.
“By bringing a gallery exhibition into a shopping centre, our aim was to reach a new audience and encourage new conversations about freedom. Which, when you read the comments, is exactly what happened.”
Princes Quay is also playing host to a gigantic 20m installation, modelled on the Bowhead Whale as part of the UK City of Culture 2017’s latest Look Up project.
The lifesize sculpture has been created by renowned artist Claire Morgan from over 12,000 fragments of paper and 4,270 individual threads. Titled Elephant in the Room, the major new artwork highlights Hull’s relationship with the sea and explores the impact our consumer culture is having on the environment.
