URBAN OPERA COLLECTIVE PERFORM AT PRINCES QUAY
Hull Urban Opera Collective bring the Magic of Mozart to city centre shoppers

Hull Urban Opera Collective will be taking over Princes Quay to perform a piece from Mozart’s the Magic Flute as part of their Cruel Britannia series. Their pop-up performances are set to amaze and inspire shoppers, with characters appearing in different parts of the centre throughout the afternoon as the story plays out.
Known for their performances as part of Hull’s UK City of Culture where they took to the streets and made famous musical pieces relevant again. Director Russell Plows aims to give as many Hull people as possible the opportunity to experience live opera for free.
HUOC have now teamed up with Back to Ours to work towards a full-size street opera group. That will take part in 15-20 minute performances in various locations.
This latest performance aims to bring opera to the ears of Hull residents and visitors. Helping them become accustomed to the sounds of the symphonies and encouraging them to embrace this classical form of theatre.
The Hull-based artists believe that Hull deserves its own unique opera scene which reflects the city’s pragmatism, playfulness and sardonic sense of humour. The Cruel Britannia series will serve as a light-hearted, satirical social commentary, with Lady Britannia gracing the streets in a costume made of rubbish.
Princes Quay Centre Manager, John Magee, said:
“Hull Urban Opera Collective are making opera accessible and enjoyable and we’re thrilled to have them perform right here in Princes Quay. The group will be making full use of the shopping centre – even the escalators and lifts will be involved, so expect something a little different.”
Each performance will last 6-8 minutes which will be repeated hourly.
