Samsara puts the focus on Fair Trade! Craft Store raising awareness as part of One World Week
Princes Quay’s Samsara Craft Store is hoping to make shoppers think about how the products they buy are sourced and produced as part of One World Week.
The global initiative, which runs from 21-28 October, aims to encourage people to build a just and equal society while safeguarding environmental resources for future generations.
Samsara Craft Store, located within Quay 40 at Princes Quay, is ran by two local entrepreneurs, of which, one of the owners, Denise Harrison sells unusual Fair Trade items made on the Indonesian island of Bali.
“We’ve always been a Fair Trade company, so it was really important for us to support One World Week,” Denise explains. “It’s a vital opportunity to raise awareness about the injustices that cause poverty and conflict across the planet, making people think about the sustainability of the products they buy.”
Samsara Craft Store was recently accredited by The British Association for Fair Trade Shops & Suppliers (BAFTS), one of only 130 retailers across the UK to gain the status, and is also an official drop-off point for Ecobricks, an initiative in which the public are invited to donate plastic bottles stuffed with non-biological waste that can be recycled as reusable building blocks.
“All of our items are handmade from sustainable materials and we apply the Fair Trade principles across everything we do, from the region in Bali we source materials from to the supply chain we use,” Denise adds. “Many stores claim they offer Fair Trade goods, but we’re the first in Hull to receive official recognition, proving all our efforts are genuine and have been worthwhile.
Princes Quay Centre Manager, John Magee, said: “Denise and her team are doing a great job in raising awareness about Fair Trade, and becoming one of only 130 businesses across the UK to receive BAFTS recognition is testament to their hard work and dedication. We are really proud that Hull’s first official Fair Trade store is in Princes Quay!
“Since opening in April this year, the store is doing really well. They have some fantastic and unusual products on offer for customers, with a great Halloween range at the moment, and big plans for their Christmas stock.”
Samsara can be found within Quay 40, which is effectively two shops in one, with both businesses offering shoppers something a little different from the usual high street fare. Denise’s Samsara Craft Store is complemented by The Tea Shop, which specialises in artisan loose-leaf teas from around the world.
Samsara Craft Store customers can receive a 10% discount on certain products from 21-28 October. To browse and buy their products online, visit www.samsaracraftstore.co.uk or the store’s Facebook page.
